The “Combe Sisters”, Val & Gill,
have produced a booklet, “Brockhampton 1900-1950”. It’s based on
a walk they guided around the village last May in which they discussed
the family names that had been in the area, where they’d lived, their
occupations, who they married, how buildings had changed and their new
occupants. It’s a valuable contribution to the understanding of
the place and its diversity, from sisters who’ve spent long lives here
and whose memories have not been addled by their being offspring of the
then Combe Brewery – now sadly no more. To buy a copy (£2) – ring
Georgina on 820423 or email me (see below), and I’ll pass
it on.
- The February 9th film is “One Day” based on David
Nichols’ novel. This is supposed to be a very good film even
though it replaces the planned show. We were disappointed that
the film distributors’ suddenly withdrew permission for the villages to
show the 25th anniversary performance of “Phantom of the Opera” at the
RAH which would have been a real change. Distributors do seem to
enjoy mucking us all about – be interested to know why! February
tickets will be on the door and we’d love to see you there!
Doors open 7.00 for show at 7.30.
- BADS are now planning a 2012 production – still in
the process of selecting a play. The show will be in mid-November
but it’s hoped to hold a social event on April 14th including some
entertainment. After the fillip of a successful December play,
the intention is to build on the new enthusiasm. If you are one
of the new enthusiasts, do come to the next BADS meeting at the Village
Hall on February 23rd at 7.30. This time I’ve got the date right!
