EDITORIAL Time
again to prepare for the Show. The basic rule applies. It’s
only a success if you make it so and, conveniently, there’s a mass of
ways to help. See the double page spread inside to see those ways
to help and then choose the categories you want to enter.
Helping with the Show will be good practice for next year’s celebration
of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee planning of which is in the pipeline.
The reformed BADs has chosen its inaugural production. The play
is a comedy called “Comfort & Joy” written by comedian and folk
musician, Mike Harding. Performances will be in early December.
Don’t forget to let Doris Austin (820425) know if you would like a new
season of Tai Chi Qi Gong sessions. I’m certainly hoping there’ll
be more.
There are some details of one local Oil Buying Club on this page.
I believe there are other local bulk schemes. Can we have details
of those please so buyers can compare.
With luck you’ll get this in time to see the Malvern Swordsmen Morris
at the Craven on Wednesday. There is also the Annual Beer
Festival on August bank Holiday weekend.
Items for the next Issue (Oct/Nov) by 20th. September Please..

The Produce Show and Fete is on its Way
SATURDAY 27TH AUGUST
STARTING AT 2.00pm
It’s great entertainment for all the family
A display by the Thames Valley Morris Men from 2.20
The Fun Dog Show at 2.45
Children’s Races and Grand Tug of War from 3.50
Raffle draw and presentation of cups and prizes at 3.25
Fantastic Auction of Show Produce from 4.40
In between all that there is time to view
the exhibits in the village hall and the show marquee.
Take part in the other activities. Maybe just relax
with tea and a cake and have a go at the special Tea Time Quiz or have
a good old chin wag with a refreshing glass of beer cider or
Pimms.
The children and grandchildren can visit ‘kids corner’
and have a go on the bouncy castle, take a dig in the lucky dip
tub, get a tiger face in the face painting section or top up with
an ice cream and a soft drink.
Last year you did really well with
increasing the number of entries. So let’s all have a go at making it
an even better display of what we can all grow, bake, knit, paint and
photograph because the more you enter the more we have to sell at the
Grand Auction at the end of the show.
Later in this edition of Village Live you will find a
guide on how to make a success of your entry. Let’s get everyone in the
family, including the grandchildren, involved in making at least one
entry in one class.

Your Show Needs Your Help
The organising committee have put in
all the planning for this year’s show but in the run up to the show
they need your help to provide some of the things that make the show
the success it is. Please have a look down the list below and see what
you can offer and then contact the person named if you can help.
Cakes
When making your Ginger & Marmalade cake for the
cake competition (Class 57) would you make another different cake to
sell on the cake stall or use to serve in the tea tent. Please contact
Enid Turner on 820331
Nearly new and unwanted gifts and books etc but not jumble
Do you have a gift which you appreciated receiving but
have no practical use for. Also Cd’s and DVd’s and books which could
make space for new ones. Even though you may no longer want them
someone else may pay a few bob for them.
Please contact Julia Chandler on 820629
Raffle Prizes
If you can give a prize please either bring it to the
show, early on please, or preferably contact Gill Lanfear on 820862
beforehand.
Plants
Victoria Logue will again sell plants you would like to
donate. Please make sure it is one you would want to buy to plant in
late August. So tomato seedlings? No thank you. What will work best is
if you have siblings from unusual admired plants from your garden or
your house. If you have 000’s of Aquilegias then it is probable your
neighbours do too! Please label the plant. The English name is fine. Do
not price it Victoria will do that for you. Either contact her on
820772 to let her know what you can give or bring the plant to the
show.
Outdoor furniture
We need tables and chairs and parasols for the tea
tent. If you can lend some please contact Nick Fresson on 820678. He
will arrange to have it picked up and delivered back to you.
Volunteers
We need volunteers to assist with running all the
activities. Please volunteer to give us just half an hour of your time
during the show. Contact Malcolm Bell on 821397 to offer your help
Making a Successful Entry to the Produce Show
Entering the show helps to make it
the success it has been for the last 64 years. A great display of the
talents of everyone who lives in the parishes!
So don’t keep your talent hidden. Have a go and enter
at least one class. If you can’t find the copy of the schedule
for the show that was delivered to you go to sevenhampton.org/show2011schedule or contact Malcolm Bell on 01242 821397.
If you have a child who wants to enter the hand painting in Class 79 then go to
sevenhampton.org/show2011class79 or contact Malcolm Bell.
The tips in this guide won’t guarantee you will win but
they will give you a real sense of satisfaction that you have done your
best and hopefully had some fun along the way.
Get your entry form filled in properly and sent in on time.
Use one form per person entering and ensure all the
entries for that person are on that form. If you need more space write
on the back or complete a second form and make sure they are stapled
together.
If you cannot find the form that was distributed with
the show schedule or need more than one then download from
sevenhampton.org/show2011entryform.
Have the schedule nearby so you can check the number and description of the classes you are entering.
Have the right total entry fee. It is 20p per class except children’s classes 76-88, which are 10p a class.
Entry forms and fees must reach the Show Secretary Ray Oldham at Rose Cottage by Wed 25th Aug.
Get your actual entry to the Village Hall on time
Go to the Village Hall on Friday 26th August between 6.00pm and 6.30pm, or the next morning between 7.30am and 9.30am.
Ray Oldham will give you an exhibitor’s ticket for each
class you have entered. Then take your entry and the exhibitor’s ticket
to the place in the hall or the show marquee where the class place for
each of your entries is marked out.
If your entry is in any of classes 1 to 69 and you want
it back at the end of the show then tell Ray at this time and he will
give you another ticket to put with your entry. If you do not do this
it is likely your entry will be included in the end of show auction.
Do any final arranging of your exhibit and place your exhibitor’s ticket for it next to it.
Please do not move any other exhibit or ticket which is already there.
OK, that’s all fine but how do I present my entry in the right way?
Here are some general hints followed by some more
specific help for nearly all of the classes which have been set up with
help from the RHS Horticultural Show Handbook and the W.I Handbook for
Judges.
Try to avoid a last minute rush
Check that you are exhibiting the correct number of
items required for each class and that you have followed any
presentational requirements set out in the Show Schedule. That means in
the correct containers or on the recommended mounting for things like
Art and Photography.
With fruit and vegetables the judges will be looking
for “uniformity of all the characteristics of the specimens
constituting the exhibit”. So select specimens that are of as similar
size, shape and colour as possible.
Vegetables
Wash vegetables carefully with a soft cloth and plenty of water. Most
can be placed directly on the show bench (if relevant, stalks all
facing the same way).
For Potatoes in classes 5 and 6 have equally matched tubers with shallow eyes and free from blemishes; stage on a plate.
For onions uniform, well ripened bulbs of good colour are required.
There are 2 classes, round onions and ones that are flatter at the
base. The tops should be bent over and tied or whipped using raffia or
string, and the roots neatly trimmed back to the basal plate. Show
onions on rings or soft collars – sections cut from the inner cardboard
of toilet rolls do very well.
Tomatoes in class 15 need to be staged on a plate, stalk uppermost.
Fruit
Pick as near to show time as practicable.
Fruit in general should be picked with the stalks intact.
Handle the fruits as little as possible and by their stalks to preserve the natural bloom.
Use scissors, not fingers, to remove soft fruit.
Fruit should be “fresh, uniform, free from blemish and characteristic in shape and colour”.
Do not polish the fruit.
Stalks should always point to the back of the table.
Apples and similar fruit are best on a plate (paper will do)
Flowers
Note the number of flowers asked for in the schedule, too many or too few will eliminate your entry from the judging.
Try to arrange the flowers so they face the front – you can use oasis
or scrunched up clear plastic bags, cellophane or cling film in the
container to achieve this.
Measure your arrangement to ensure it is within the
measurements on the schedule, otherwise it will be eliminated.
Pots should be clean and no bigger than the size stated in the
schedule. Measure it. What it says it is on the base isn’t always right.
With plants remove any dead leaves or spent flowers
Preserves (Classes 45 to 50)
Use plain jars with no trade names so start saving them now if you have not already got a stock.
Lids should be either twist tops, pliable press on covers or a wax disc covered with a cellophane top.
You do not need a wax disc under a twist top or pliable plastic cover.
Jars with Jams should be filled to 3mm (?”) of the top. Fruit should be
evenly distributed and the skins tender. The consistency should be
‘jellified’. Runny is no good!
Jars with Chutney should be filled to 12mm (½”) of the top
Cookery
Biscuits for Class 51 should be rolled and cut in a uniform size with a
5-6cm (2-2½”) fluted cutter. Make them approximately 3mm (?”) thick.
The Fruit Flan in Class 52 should be made with short crust pastry and
you can add sugar and mix with egg and water. Use either a flan dish or
a ring. If you are using a dish try putting it on a hot baking tray to
help cook the base.
The Bread in Class 55 should be well risen and evenly baked to a golden brown.
If you cannot find the recipe for the cake in Class 57 go to sevenhampton.org/show2011recipe.
The Quiche in Class 59 should be pastry flan base which is not too
thick. The filling should be a savoury egg custard which is well
blended and has a good combination of flavours, carefully seasoned.
Make sure the base is well filled but not overflowing.

Century Club
The annual outing of the
Century Club in June this year was to see the house and gravity-fed
fountain at Stanway House. I was away in Scotland at the time so
Gill Hyatt organized and was responsible for this - for which many
thanks Gill. I am told that the outing went well and was found
interesting though the garden was not up to expectations. The
fountain, however, was most impressive and the house very interesting.
Jack Stringer was booked to give the talk at the July
meeting which was to be about Libya, a topical subject at the
moment. Unfortunately, he was unwell so I stepped in and gave an
illustrated talk about New England. Unfortunately, (again) a lot
of the slides were very dark, a fact which I cannot explain as when run
through at home the day before they had not been so dark. Sorry
everyone - will try to do better!
The next meeting on Aug' 9th will be organized and run
by Doris Austin (I will be on a river cruise in Germany), many thanks
to Doris. She would like everyone to tell about their earliest
memory and/or bring something of interest and tell the story behind it.
The September meeting is one week earlier than usual on
Tuesday 6th September. The speaker is Janet Margrie, subject to be
announced.
