Bus Service Options - Have Your Say
The
County Council’s review of bus services has resulted in these two
options for our local service, both mean changing at Andoverford for a
bus to Cheltenham.
Proposal 1:
The early morning Monday to Friday service will run between Temple
Guiting and Andoversford where connections can be made with other bus
services to and from Cheltenham.
The shoppers bus will run on one weekday and on Saturday at different
times, again with connections for Cheltenham buses at Andoversford.
Proposal 2:
A community transport type of service could be provided serving
villages between Temple Guiting and Syreford along with other villages
in the area connecting at Andoversford for services to Cheltenham.
Depending on the type of service offered it may be necessary to book
trips in advance and departure times along with precise pick-up and
drop-off points will be confirmed when bookings are made.
GCC’s policy is “to ensure that people can get to essential places including work, school and medical facilities.” Do you think either of these options fulfil that promise?
Have your say by filling in a questionnaire online at
www.gloucestershire.gov.uk/busreview or complete a paper one obtainable
from the Parish Clerk 01242 820718. The completed questionnaire
must be received by the county council no later than 27th June 2011.
You can also come and speak to council officers and fill in a
questionnaire at one of the roadshows or information evenings - see
above website for details or ring 01452 426263.
65th Produce Show and Fete
If
you live in Sevenhampton/Brockhampton/Charlton Abbotts and Hawling you
should have received a copy of the Schedule for this year’s Produce
Show to be held on Saturday 27th August. If you would like one and it
has not arrived, please contact Show Chairman, Malcolm Bell on 821397 -
or download from www.sevenhampton.org/show2011.
Why So Early?
The end of August seems a long way off and you may be asking why the
schedule is published at this time of year. Malcolm Bell,
Chairman said
It is mainly to help people start to identify what they might have a go
at growing in time for the show. The show survives as a benefit for the
communities in the parishes because people have a go and enter. So it
is important to give a prompt now to consider what to grow and to think
what they might make and bake.
Simpler Classes - for Men?
The baking and making sections have been simplified again this year to
give more attractive chances to have a go and enter. Our show chairman
has challenged the male element in the community that boasts of its
culinary expertise to show what it really can do!
Malcolm hoped many of us would take the time to boost entries for the
photographic classes (Nos 73 -75). Time to sift/surf through photos not
looked at for a while and see what could be shared with us all.
Involve the Family
Start now to sign up the children and the grand children to have a go
at the children’s sections. There might just be something there which
they can make as part of a school activity project during the second
half of the summer term.
Lend a Hand - even for just an hour
And finally a plea from Malcolm for some more volunteers to
help with the running of the show. Even just an hour in the week before
the show or half an hour on the day itself will make a difference to
everyone in enjoying the day. Give him a call if you would like to give
some time to helping what is a great fun day for the whole community.
So the message ringing loud and clear from the Show Schedule is enter,
enter and enter and please volunteer to give some small amount of your
time.

Ascot Races Cancelled
...well, our local version anyway.
The planned local ‘Ascot Races’ event, where live
coverage of the races was to be screened to allow locals to dress up,
place a bet - and take the odd refreshment, all in aid of Village Hall
funds, has had to be postponed for this year.
We want to set up a small group to get this fun event
off the ground for next year so if you can offer any
expertise, lateral thinking or just practical assistance please
let Georgina Oldham know on 820423.

Century Club
At the April meeting the 2011 AGM was
finally completed by Iris reading the minutes of the 2010 AGM, which
she had forgotten to bring in March.
Alec gave a talk entitled "My father and the silent
cinema", he started by saying that he was not going to become
accustomed to giving talks!. He told a brief history of the silent
movies and went on to tell stories of his father's involvement
inplaying to accompany silent films. The advent of "talkies"
meant 30,000 musicians found themselves out of work in the space of a
few months.
The May meeting was unusual in that there was no
speaker. Instead members brought along an interesting object and
told its story. These ranged from very small, ie, a thimble (2 in fact)
to large, a yoke. Items collected from abroad, an Omani hand
shield, very old, to jewellery from Australia, almost new.
Everything had interesting stories attached, and everyone agreed it had
been an enjoyable and interesting meeting. In fact, one member
requested it be repeated in the future.
June 13th will see annual outing which will be to
Stanway House and garden where the tallest gravity fed fountain in
Europe is in the grounds. Don't stand down wind! Gill Hyett is
very kindly organizing this as I will be away. Thank you Gill.
See you all on July 12th when Mr. Jack Stringer will be giving a talk on Libya.
The club is open to anyone of retirement age. For further information contact Iris Young 01242 583098

Have you seen our missing 'telephone' signs?
Four ‘TELEPHONE’ signs have gone
missing from the kiosk in Brockhampton. They were gifted as
replacements for those missing for ages and were in the kiosk ready for
its refurbishment. The two now installed signs were stored
elsewhere.
If you know where they went, please give the Parish Clerk a call on 820718.
Sevenhampton and District W.I.
May
8th’s Village Walk & Tea had a really good turnout with 30
residents including an injured Val Smith - trundled round in a chair by
the valiant Ray Oldham - taking part.
The open night about The Purton Hulks was also well supported as was
our last meeting which included discussion on our two resolutions for
the WI AGM in Liverpool. This was followed by a talk on
& demo of Belly Dancing.
