No Gas for us - but we've enjoyed your company!

No gas supply for us but the Parish has gained in other ways from National Grid’s pipeline work in the area.  A major operation but we’ve been impressed with its organisation and sensitivity to us all from the off.  Added to that the company has funded a new large tent for the Produce Show plus paying for work on the Coln-side footpath in Sevenhampton which was in danger of disappearing into the water.

Both Produce Show Chair, John Benson, & Parish Clerk, Annie van Rossem, have expressed our thanks but perhaps Annie catches their main contribution best when she says of the project  “...that listening to local householders there has been nothing but praise for National Grid and the way they have handled this massive operation."

Advance Notice - 'The Canterville Ghost'
We’re thrilled to announce that professional theatre company ‘Rain or Shine’ will be including Brockhampton Rhodes Memorial Hall in their winter schedule.
The proposed date is
Sunday 5th December,
for both a matinee and evening
performance of Oscar Wilde’s
‘The Canterville Ghost’.
Those who have seen the company perform at outdoor venues during the summer can vouch for their excellence.
This promises to be a popular event so please contact Julia Chandler on 820629 for advance bookings.
Watch out for further details!

John and Gill Lanfear

We would like to say a huge thank-you to all our family and friends who gave us such a super night out the Craven Arms on Friday August 27th to celebrate John's 80th birthday, and our 50th wedding anniversary.  It was an absolute surprise, even Ed, George and Dan didn't give it away.  I was only going down to make sure Annie & I had organized the raffle properly for the Produce Show the next day.
Thank you for those lovely presents, the cake, and even a trip on the 'Orient Express' next March, - we were both speechless, we are so lucky.
Thank you also to Anne (& Bill) for putting those lovely words in 'Where I Live" in the Echo the next day - what a very special week-end.
John and Gill Lanfear

Produce Show

Another successful Show! Thanks to all the helpers,
National Grid, Cotswold Trailers and also to Brian and Tania at Gassons Farm, who gave us the burgers and bangers for the BBQ. The rain stayed away but the visitors didn't. Entries were slightly up overall and so were the takings.
All the surplus money raised goes to local causes; all requests should be sent to the Secretary, Annie van Rossem, at The Old Shop before the end of October. Thank you all for your support.
John Benson, Chairman, Produce Show Committee
Editor's note, John Benson Retires as show Chairman this year.

Toy Story 3 is not only a masterpiece but is the most
heart-rending film I have ever seen.”
“...I had to steel myself to keep from bawling like a
baby during „Toy Story 3? which - among many
other things - is a very witty spoof of a classic Hollywood

Century Club
The August meeting, in spite of a small attendance, was successfully run by Doris Austin, who had suggested a games afternoon as a change from a speaker and a break for Iris. Games played were Halva, whist, dominoes and draughts and produced much laughter which is always a good sign of enjoyment.
In September Liz Suckling gave a most interesting, informative and enjoyable talk on the "Archeography of Belas Knap". I must admit I had not heard of “Archeography” before. Liz explained that it is the study of ancient monuments in the context of their situation and was of special interest to us as Belas Knap is situated on our own doorstep.
The meeting was very well attended, 26 people being present which is the largest number we have had since I have been involved with the Club, and shows that the Century Club is thriving.
We have welcomed several new members over the last few months - any man or woman past retirement age will hear an interesting talk and enjoy a nice tea every month (except January, the day of the annual outing and the annual lunch out)
On October 12th. we welcome Duncan Willoughby who will talk about the Sue Ryder home and November 9th is the date for our annual lunch out at „The Royal?, in Horsefair St, Charlton Kings, opposite the church. It might be useful if members could let Iris know before, or at, the October meeting if they will attend. For further information contact Iris Young 01242 583098
