EDITORIAL
This is the Produce Show Special and we hope that you’ll all find at least one and preferably many more classes that you’d enjoy entering.  Don’t forget to ring John Benson 820 960 to volunteer to help on a stall or sideshow.
The Donnywell Clapper Bridge is an exciting discovery and it will be great to see whether it is revivable and whether we can work out how the route was used in the past.
Mike Moseley gave a short but interesting talk on green power at the Parish Council pre-meet.  If you have a large south-facing roof then you could reduce your electricity bill - planners permitting.
As is now traditional, the Produce Show shares Bank Holiday weekend with the Craven Arms Beer Festival which includes a Pig Roast on the Saturday evening  as well as “Live Music”  -  mellow or metal?  We’ve occasionally found sitting in the pub, when the music’s on the opposite side of the plot, works best!

Look out too for ragwort and if you do pull it up - destroy it properly.  Don’t dump it where it can dry and become even more toxic for horses and other live stock.  Good idea to inform the farmer if you find it when walking locally.

Donnywell

The parish council has been investigating improving the bridge at Donnywell. On clearing away some of the soil and
vegetation small stone clapper bridge has appeared.  The council is now considering restoring this bridge, replacing the stone where necessarySEE

First Aid Course

If sufficient people are interested the Emergency Planning Committee is exploring the possibility of running a First Aid Course in the Village Hall in the near future.  Please contact Lynne Jackson (820 469) to put your name on the list.

Village Hall Parking

The Hall Committee would like to ask local residents and Hall users to please respect the parking restrictions imposed at the front of the Hall.
The disabled bay is for disabled users only and these users may need extra space either side of the marked bay to access their vehicles.
In addition, cars should not be parked across either of the fire exit doors at the front of the Hall unless on a temporary basis whilst being unloaded.
Regular disabled users have experienYour Rough Guide to the Produce Show and Feteced difficulties in exiting from their cars recently and several visitors paying to use the Hall have commented that they have found it difficult to unload heavy items because of cars being parked across this area.
In general, Hall users should fill the Hall car park first before resorting to parking on the lane.  If you do need to do this, please do not park across driveways or in a position which makes it difficult for local residents to access their properties.

Your Show Needs....You

As ever the Show climax will be Charles Arkell’s Produce Auction. What he sells depends on You. Give him plenty to flog by entering your beans even if bent, your marmalade a bit runny or cakes rock solid. Doesn’t matter - enter anyway.

If those of us who never usually enter, try to have a go at maybe one or two classes each the judges would have a tougher time. If you can’t enter,persuade the grand kids. Play a full part and really enjoy the Show. (Tips & rules here but don’t despair.)

 How to Win at the Produce Show

(or at least not be disqualified)
With help from the RHS Horticultural Show Handbook and WI Handbook for Judges
ENTRY FORM, WHERE & WHEN TO DISPLAY YOUR EXHIBITS
  • One form per person.
  • Complete the form with the Schedule nearby so you can easily see the number and description of the classes you are entering.
  • The entry fee for each class is 20p, except the children’s classes (77-89 inclusive), which are 10p.
  • If you need more room, write on the back of the form, photocopy, or a new one or download from www.sevenhampton.org/show
  • Get your completed form and entry fees to the Show Secretary, Ray Oldham, at Rose Cottage by Wednesday. 25th August.
  • Go to the Village Hall on Friday, 27th August between 6.00pm and 6.30pm, or the next morning between 7.30am and 9.30am.  Ray Oldham will give you exhibitor’s tickets for each class you have entered.  Then go to the Show Tent or the Hall with your entry and your tickets where places for each Class will be marked out.  Arrange your display alongside other exhibitors’ items and place your ticket next to your entry.  Please do not move another exhibitor’s ticket away from his/her entry.
GENERAL HINTSRagwort
We have been asked to remind your that Ragwort is a  listed pernicious weed and toxic, sometimes fatal, to grazing livestock and should be pulled up and destroyed before it seeds.

  • Leave yourself ample time to do your arranging – no last minute rush!
  • Check that you are exhibiting the correct number of items as stipulated in brackets in each class!
  • In Fruit & Vegetable Shows “uniformity of all the characteristics of the specimens constituting the exhibit is important”. Do not mix, for example, large specimens with others that are smaller.  Choose specimens of as similar colour, as similar shape and as similar size as possible
VEGETABLES
  • Wash vegetables carefully with a soft cloth and plenty of water.
  • Most vegetables can be placed directly on the show bench (if relevant, stalks all facing the same way).
  • POTATOES. Select equally matched
  • tubers with shallow eyes and free from
  • blemishes; stage on a plate.
  • ONIONS. Uniform, well ripened bulbs of good colour are required.  There are 2 classes, round onions and ones that are flatter at the base.  The tops should be bent over and tied or whipped using raffia or string, and the roots neatly trimmed back to the basal plate.  Show onions on rings or soft collars – sections cut from the inner cardboard of toilet rolls do very well.
  • TOMATOES.  Stage on a plate, stalk uppermost.
COOKERY
  • BREAD ROLLS Any shape acceptable, but should be uniform in size, well risen and neat in shape. Glaze should be applied evenly and carefully. Weight should be light Avoid ugly marks from kneading and shaping.
  • SAUSAGE ROLLS These should be uniform in size and colour. Size 5-6cm (2-2 1/2" ).If shortcrust pastry is used the pastry join should be underneath the roll. Sausagemeat should be well flavoured and in good proportion to the pastry. Glaze evenly and carefully.
  • MINCE PIES should be identical in size and shape. Use shortcrust pastry with a full-size lid. They should be lightly golden and cooked underneath. Dust lightly with icing sugar. Use a flavoursome mincemeat filling.
FRUIT
  • Pick as near to show time as practicable.
  • Fruit in general should be picked with the stalks intact.
  • Handle the fruits as little as possible and by their stalks to preserve the natural bloom.
  • Use scissors, not fingers, to remove soft fruit.
  • Fruit should be “fresh, uniform, free from blemish and characteristic in shape and colour”.
  • Do not polish the fruit.
  • Stalks should always point to the back of the table.
  • Apples and similar fruit are best on a plate (paper will do).
FLOWERS
  • Try to arrange the flowers so they face the front – you can use oasis or scrunched up clear plastic bags or cellophane in the container to achieve this.  Note the number of flowers asked for in the schedule, too many or too few will eliminate your entry from the judging.
  • Pots should be clean and no bigger than the size stated in the schedule.
  • PLANTS. Remove any dead leaves or spent flowers.
FLOWER ARRANGING
  • Measure your arrangement to ensure it is within the measurements on the schedule, otherwise it will be
  • eliminated.
PRESERVES
  • Plain jars should be used with no trade names.
  • Lids must also be plain.
  • Various tops are acceptable – twist tops, pliable press on covers or wax disc covered with a cellophane top.
  • Jars should be filled to within 1/8” of the top.
  • No wax disc is necessary with a twist or plastic top.
  • Labels should state contents and date when made.

Century Club

Our July meeting was on Tuesday 13th and Arthur Burgess showed us beautiful pictures of gardens, most of which were those of the Garden Club members.  Arthur had showed these pictures earlier and they had been enjoyed so much that he was asked for a repeat performance for us at the Century Club.  A computer gremlin disrupted the order of some of the pictures but nonetheless everyone enjoyed the presentation very much.
