Village Live no 67

(Text only edition)

February /March 2010

Published for the residents of Sevenhampton  and Brockhampton, Gloucestershire.
Sponsored  Sevenhampton Parish Council

Time to say thanks to those snow heroes who helped in our recent incarceration.
Liz & Chris Ball’s Good Neighbourhood transport for Di’s outpatient trip was traditionally rewarded when they too were snowed up with huge drifts a few days later.
Georgina & Ray Oldham are always heroes in getting the papers round.  This time often assisted by Annie Weatherley & Sheila Agius who became our volunteer postmen.
Annie W 4x4’d me to the shops, then Em Lanfear got me to work a couple of times plus rescuing the odd resident hiking from cars abandoned in Andoversford.
Bill Lanfear transported the Rural Cinema kit from Toddington.  Sad the treacherous ice made us cancel the show - didn’t want any broken bones.
The pub too made great efforts, ferrying deliveries arriving in the village down to the pub - on foot & sometimes by 4x4.
Many have praised Milkman Mark for his extraordinary feats in delivering milk under such harsh conditions.  Did better than the supermarkets.
Try www.sevenhampton.org/tradespeople  for details of all the tradesmen who service the villages including Mark.

Many heroes are missing from this list but between them all, they made a problematic  - if pretty - time bearable.  Thanks to them all.
The PC is drawing up plans for future emergencies. Your help is needed  (see opposite).

Items for the next Issue (April/May)  by 20th. March please.

STREET NAMES

The Parish Council has decided not to go ahead with the ‘formal’ naming of streets which would have obliged residents to use the names in their address.
Instead it has been resolved to produce a map for local use showing names commonly used for our lanes. This could be given to newcomers to the village.  It would also be an opportunity to give names to some of the roads which do not currently have a locally accepted label

EMERGENCY PLANNING

Following the aftermath of the floods in 2007, and more recently the snow, and in common with many other parish councils, it has been decided to set up a Community Emergency Plan.

Volunteers are being sought for this, initially to take part in a  working party, and then to help co-ordinate if and when a situation arises.
Please contact the Clerk on 01242 820718 for more details.

VILLAGE HALL REPAIRS AND DEVELOPMENT FUND

For some time people in the village have been organising fundraising events to improve the Fund.
Their efforts, and villagers excellent support of  events, mean that we are increasing the Fund steadily in preparation for repairs and improvements which are going to be essential over the next two to three years.
All your contributions and support are very much appreciated by your Committee and we will keep you informed as and when the programme of work unfolds.   Many thanks,
Brian Turner  Chairman

PRODUCE SHOW & FETE

The A.G.M. was held on 9th November and, due to the success of the Show, significant contributions were able to be made to local causes, as follows;-
£750 to St. Andrew’s Church Restoration Fund; £575 towards the maintenance of Rhodes Hall & Buildings (specifically, on this occasion, the stone shed at the rear); £100 to 1st Sevenhampton Scout Troop for camping equipment
The committee thanked Brian and Tania at Gassons Farm for their generous donations of meat for the BBQ and the auction and all those who helped to make the Show so successful.
The committee and officers were re-elected for another year.
The 2010 Show will take place on Saturday 28 August, so please put the date in your diary now!
The Show Schedules will be distributed in April, so keep a look out for them. In the meantime if you get a chance with the weather being so bad, put some compost on the top of your veggie patch/flower bed; it will leach into the soil and refresh it for the season to come.
Based on last year’s Show and the number of entries and participants, the committee believe that targets of 120 participants (106 this year) and 600 entries (546 last year) are readily attainable.  See you (and your entries) there!

YOUR Show needs MORE of you!
John Benson, Chairman, Produce Show Committee

The powerful and true-life tale of Charles Darwin
tickets £3.00 available on the door

What happens when a world-renowned scientist, crushed by the loss of his eldest daughter, formulates a theory in conflict with religious dogma? This is the story of Charles Darwin and his master-work "The Origin of Species". It tells of a global revolution played out the confines of a small English village; a passionate marriage torn apart by the most dangerous idea in history; and a theory saved from extinction by the logic of a child.

PLEASE DON'T PINCH GRIT

This may seem a little petty but could have serious consequences.  We all know about the recent bad weather and what it did to the roads and our ability to get out and about.  However, it seems that some people have been removing a little more than just the odd shovelful to clear their own driveways.  Clearly if we all did this it could have consequences for other road users.  No gritting of teeth now!
