Village Live no 65 (Text only edition)

October /November 2009

Published for the residents of Sevenhampton  and Brockhampton, Gloucestershire.
Sponsored  Sevenhampton Parish Council

Good to hear from show chairman John Benson, that the show was deemed a success with both loads of new entries and more money raised.
As the days get shorter, the fundraisers abound with events in support of some fine cancer charities as well as for Church & Hall funds. The first being Oct 10th’s Jumble Sale which I think with a bit of effort we could stock in its entirety.
Items for the next Issue (December/ January) by 20th Nov please.

Tai Chi for Older People -Would you be Interested?

These fun classes promote strong muscles and bones.  They also help improve balance and postural stability. It is particularly useful if you have a fear of falling, have balance problems, a history of falls and/or low bone density.
The activities can be done seated or standing and the session closes with a taster of Tai Chi Chi Kung.
Tai Chi Chi Kung - 18 moves for health, which have been shown to reduce the risk of falls & improve balance, strength & co-ordination. It leaves you with a sense of total calm and well-being.

If there is enough interest sessions could be arranged in the village hall.

If you are interested let Doris Austin know - 01242 820425

Post Office News

The Post Office has confirmed that, even if someone had been found to replace the previous postmistress, the village Post Office would still have closed because of the low number of customer transactions - around 50 per week.
The Post Office are, however, willing to offer a twelve-month trial outreach service whereby someone from Bourton Post Office will occupy the old Post Office once a week, for up to 2 hours.  We don't know which two hours it will be yet, it is hoped that it can be arranged to coincide with other events at the Hall, such as the Coffee Morning or Century Club.  Please use the service when it is up and running to make it a success.
Thanks must go to the Chairman of the Rhodes Memorial Hall Trustees, Brian Turner, for negotiating this scheme with the Post Office.

Keep an Eye on your Roadside Hedges

The Parish Council has become aware that a few roadside trees, hedges and shrubbery in the parish have become overgrown to such an extent that they could cause nuisance to walkers and other road users.  If you own land which borders on the highway please have a check to see if the vegetation needs cutting back.
Under the 1980 highways act owners of vegetation which overhangs a highway have a duty to ensure that it does not endanger or obstruct vehicles, pedestrians or horse riders, or obscure the view of drivers of vehicles.

Sevenhampton ‘Phone Box to be Adopted at Last

But BT want us to take on the Brockhampton one as well
BT have finally sent the paperwork to the Parish Council so that they can ‘adopt’ the Sevenhampton Telephone Kiosk.  This means that the equipment will be removed and the Parish Council will maintain the box and use it for local information.
However, they now are asking the PC if they wish to adopt the Brockhampton one as well.
The Council has declined this offer because it would mean losing the telephone equipment. Over 100 calls were made from the Brockhampton kiosk last year compared to 3 from Sevenhampton.  BT have made it clear this is not a consultation with a view to removing the box at this stage.

Next Parish Council Meeting

Is on Wednesday  18th November at 7.30pm in the Reading Room.
As usual there will be a short Q & A session before the formal meeting begins.
All are welcome to attend

63rd PRODUCE SHOW & FETE

 A note from the Chairman
Everyone made this Show one of the most enjoyable and successful for a while.
The number of entries was up considerably (to 568 from 330 last year) and, although not reaching the levels of the late 70’s and early 80’s, there were many new names joining in, which augurs well for the future. The number of children was also well up and the children’s races (very well organised by Emma Lanfear) were enjoyed by all. Financially the Show raised £1600+ for local causes, another record performance.
A big “Thank You” to everyone who took part - to those who put in entries (especially those entering for the first time), to those who helped on the stalls and attractions, at the gate, in the refreshment tents and in preparing the field (and dismantling everything afterwards) and to the committee members who worked very hard to make everything run smoothly
.All-in-all a wonderful village event!
YOUR Show was GREAT!
John Benson, Chairman Produce Show Committee
