Village Live no 59 (Text only edition)October /November 2008
Published for the residents of Sevenhampton and Brockhampton,
Gloucestershire.
Sponsored Sevenhampton Parish Council First edition of the mag without input from Vanessa Holland trawling through the hall diary for us. We can’t run fast enough to keep up with Georgina Oldham. It means that if you want your event publicised, you’ll need to let us know. By osmosis, rumour, and reading the runes we discovered most hall bookings but only luck meant that news of The Cobalt Unit Fundraiser is included. Don’t know if we increase attendance but we do try! Another change is to Rural Cinema - no PO to flog the tickets so £3 on the door as an experiment. We’ll see how it goes - we’re an usherette short too. Volunteers? The two films for October and November are both likely to be good fun so do come along.. With Craven Curries, Jumble Sales and Robert’s Open Day for your diaries - winter is fast displacing our glorious summer. Cliffhanger! Are Sevenhampton residents going to adopt their telephone kiosk? Its fate is in the balance. For those of you even sadder than us and nothing better to do on the afternoon of October 23rd, you could watch ‘Countdown’ and witness one of the editors of this journal making something of a twerp of herself in the company of Des O’Connor, Carol Vorderman etc. Don’t put off defleaing the dog or watching paint peel to make a window for it though. Items for the next Issue (Dec/Jan) by 20th. November please. Bill & Anne Jenkin: 820338 email: removed Gassons Lane ResurfacingFollowing representations from Sevenhampton Parish Council, Gloucestershire Highways have confirmed that there is budget provision for the resurfacing of Gassons Lane in 2008/9, however they have not divulged when the work will take place. They have also agreed that the surface of the road to the Craven Arms is unsatisfactory. The Parish Council has also made representations about the state of Bakers Wood Lane.Potholes Did you know that you can report potholes or any other problem on the county’s roads by ringing 08000514514? There will be no other changes apart from cleaning and the addition of ‘Unsuitable for HGVs’ on the fingerpost to Sevenhampton Village.Parish CouncilThe next meeting ofSevenhampton Parish Council is on Wed 19th November at 7.30pm in the Reading Room, Brockhampton. Sevenhampton Telephone KioskTwo schemes are being offered by BT which give local authorities (in this case Sevenhampton Parish Council) the option of retaining Telephone Kiosks which BT want to remove.Under ‘Sponsor a Kiosk’ BT would retain the phone box complete with a cashless payphone at a cost of £500p.a. to the Parish Council. With ‘Adopt a Kiosk’ the Parish Council would purchase it for £1. The connection and payphone equipment would be removed. The Parish Council would then be responsible for the maintenance etc of the box. Agreement must be reached by 1st. November. The Parish Council decided that it has not sufficient funds to keep the box intact for £500 a year. Unfortunately, being unaware of the outcome of a trawl of local opinion at its 25th September meeting, it also felt that it was unable to support the ‘adoption’ route. However, it may convene a special meeting before the end of October to reconsider, now that it has been made aware of those local opinions. Where I LiveSheila Bartlett and Gill Lanfear, our correspondents to the Echo’s ‘Where I Live’ column (formerly known as ‘Village Voice’), have been rather disturbed of late by the amount of sub-editing the column has undergone. Particularly hacked to pieces was the entry for 20th September. However, If you have access to the internet you can read what was actually submitted on the village website. www.sevenhampton.org/whereilive. A copy has also been placed in the Reading Room.
