Village Live no 57 (Text only edition)

June /July 2008

Published for the residents of Sevenhampton  and Brockhampton, Gloucestershire.
Sponsored  Sevenhampton Parish Council

Major  changes  afoot  with  Bob  & Vanessa  Holland  uprooting  themselves and  heading  west.    They  are  plainly  thrilled  to  bits  so  despite  the  ramifications of  Hall  and  Post  Office,  there’s  nothing  to  be  done  but  to  wish  them  a  very happy future. Many  of  us  have  enjoyed  Bob’s music  on a  range of occasions and  even more  Vanessa’s  ability  to  run  not  only  the  Post Office but a bolt hole & sanctuary  -  particularly  appreciated  by  the  late  Morgan  Stanley  (incidentally  the  bank  never paid him for his name).

The downside for us all is that in addition  to  missing  them  both,  the  PO  seems  doomed unless  lurking out  there  is  someone who would enjoy the post.  Talking to  Vanessa it seems that the Post Office only  want to pay for less than half the hours she  works currently.  This seems perverse at a  time  it  could  have  picked  up  business  from the many surrounding villages which  are losing theirs. We hope that before their departure at the  beginning of July, we will be able to drag  them  to  the Hall  perhaps  for  tea &  cakes  to  let us all say bye-bye properly to a couple who’ve made  such a difference  to  the  place. Sadly for us  the end of an era!

Items for the next Issue (August/ September)  by 20th. July Please.

POST OFFICE CLOSURE

Many of you will by now have heard that Brockhampton Post Office is to close soon. The current subpostmaster, Vanessa Holland, will be moving to Cornwall in July and no-one  has yet been found to take over. Unless someone comes forward, the last day on which  Brockhampton Post Office is open for business will be Monday, 9th June. If you or anyone you know would be willing to take over the post office please contact Vanessa as  soon as possible (post office 820966 - home 820300) or Alison Edwards at Post Office  Ltd (07801095271).

Vanessa would like to express her heartfelt thanks to the many customers who have supported the post office so loyally over the past 11½ years. “Your loyal support has enabled  the post office to continue in Brockhampton while other Post Office branches have faced  closure and your valued custom is much appreciated.”

Bob and Vanessa look forward to welcoming their friends from Brockhampton and Sevenhampton to their new home at Rose Cottage, Bodelva, (2 minutes from the Eden Project  and 2 miles from Par Sands), “but please don't all come at once! We are taking with us  many happy memories of Brockhampton. Goodbye and good luck to you all. We shall  miss you.”

Parish Council Chairman’s Appreciation

Peer hard at the picture (not in this version) & you’ll see Vanessa - scuttling out of camera range - demonstrating her most famed quality.  Self-effacing to the last. Vanessa  has made  an  unpromising  corner  of  the Hall  into  a  Post Office/Visitor Centre  with  stationery,  cards,  occasional  books,  sweets  and  crisps  for  kids  to  pensioners,  local  ads, official leaflets and, always, a very warm welcome.

In addition, she kept the Hall diary and helped all users  - moving furniture twice her size in  and  out  to meet  users’  preferences.   Husband Bob  supported  the Luncheon Club  by  ferrying the meals in each Wednesday and played and organised many musical events. Personally,  I will miss Vanessa’s  help  selling Rural Cinema  tickets,  and  setting  up  the  “auditorium” each show as well as providing info for this magazine.

I’m pleased  though  that  she will no  longer have  to work on  the  accounts until midnight every Wednesday.
A hard act to follow.  Bill Jenkin

Luncheon Club to Wind Up

The Luncheon Club is to end its regular weekly sessions. The Club was started by Mrs Violet Hobbs, the  Vicar’s wife, in the 1970s as a ‘Day Centre’. Through  their own fundraising events they have enabled people who enjoy meeting friends for a chat to get together every Wednesday in the village hall for coffee,  a lunch and a natter. There were also Christmas parties and Summer outings.
Dwindling numbers and the departure of Vanessa & Bob Holland (who collected the lunches) has brought  about the closure, although members may still get together occasionally for a chat.
